Fringe 2023 - Returning Favorite - EnCompass Theatre

Funny, Like An Abortion

Monroe finds herself knocked up, and since abortions are illegal in the United States, she and her best friend Jade have an abortion party! A darkly comedic glimpse into a haunting future.

Sometimes, a show slips by me.  Sometimes, more than one show slips by me.

Back in 2019, the last in-person Fringe before the pandemic pause, I had EnCompass Theatre on my pre-Fringe Top 20 list for their show R Culture (about rape culture).  Missed it, the scheduling didn’t work out.  Last year, the first in-person Fringe after the pandemic pause, EnCompass was back again, this time with Shoe Night, about a young woman who gets a chance to confront the ex-boyfriend who ghosted her.  Missed it, again.

Third time’s the charm?  We shall see. They’re definitely on my radar. This Fringe they’re presenting Rachel Bublitz’s play Funny, Like An Abortion.

An additional way they’re using theater to engage an important issue:
“All tips and donations will be split between EnCompass Theatre and Our Justice. Our Justice was founded in 1967 by a small group of doctors, clergy, and community members to assist Minnesota women in accessing abortion care. Our Justice supports people’s reproductive and sexual human rights through their Abortion Access Fund, Abortion Assistance Lodging Program, and community advocacy grounded in reproductive justice.”

So they’re definitely walking the walk.  Maybe this time I’ll finally get around to walking it with them.

Update, their Fringe preview:
