Fringe 2023 - Top 10 - #4 - Chris Davis Does Stuff

Chris Davis Does Stuff
Chris Davis

Comedian Chris Davis brings 2 different one man shows across 5 different FRINGE performances: "Just Black Enough,” exploring race and what it means to be black, & "Seriously, I'm Not Gay,” exploring identity.

Venue: Strike Theater
Tagged for: Comedy, Audience Participation
Content Warnings: Adult Language

This show comes highly recommended by Fringe favorite Sam Landman (our sexy Colonel Sanders in last year’s bizarre Fringe offering Finger Lickin’ Good, and himself a previous pre-Fringe Top 10 artist back in 2010) which was pretty much all the recommendation I needed.

Chris Davis is a friend of Sam’s from Birmingham and this will be Chris' very first Minnesota Fringe, so Sam is doing his part as goodwill ambassador and cheerleader to do his best to make sure Chris’ experience with us is a good one.  Sam describes Chris’ style as fun, loose, and hilarious.

Exchanging messages with Chris, the comedian gave me a little more detail on the two shows he’s going to be alternating over the course of the festival:

JUST BLACK ENOUGH:
In celebration of Black History Month, Birmingham comedian Chris Davis has created a one man comedy show inspired by the holiday! He shows how all races can get along together and laugh together. Not in spite of our differences but because of embracing our differences and realizing we have so much more in common. (Update: this one's going to be on the dates during opening weekend)

SERIOUSLY, I’M NOT GAY:
You know me as a tough, gritty, macho heterosexual man, but did you know I’ve often been mistaken for being gay? It’s true! Come see me to hear tales of identity, masculinity, homosexuality, heterosexuality and perception. And when it’s all over, I’ll finally prove that… Seriously, I’m not gay. (Update: this one's going to be on the dates during closing weekend)

(Now that second one’s premise might be tricky, but if Sam is recommending it, then I figure we’re in good hands with Chris.)

During the early years of the pandemic, Chris got tired of sitting around the house, so he created an online show called “Walk'n Around With Chris” in which he… walks around, just to get outside, and perhaps he runs into people as he’s exploring the neighborhood, and trying to find humor in an unfunny time.  The videos are still posted if you’re curious about Chris and want to sample his style.

But it sounds like, just as Allison Broeren, Comedy Suitcase, Mike Fotis and Michael Shaeffer are all really good reasons to venture beyond the Cedar Riverside hub of the rest of the Fringe and see what the independent venues have to offer, Chris Davis Does Stuff is two more reasons to get yourself out to Strike Theater in particular and see some Fringe shows there as well.  I’m certainly going to.

Update, their Fringe preview:
