Fringe 2023 - Top 10 - #10 - Coyfish

Coyfish
Theatre 23
Written by Michelle de Joya
Directed by Aaron Telander

When Benji meets Danie online, he falls for her. But this is not your traditional boy-meets-girl storyline. This piece dives into the complexities of the developing relationship between two Asian Americans.

This is from a local actor and writer, Michelle de Joya, who has worked with Threshold Theater on our new play reading series, so that’s the first reason I was drawn to it.

I’ve also read some of the script, so I won’t spoil it for you.  But as a general hint, the title Coyfish is a play on Catfish. Relationships that start on the internet aren’t always what they seem. And people respond differently to the revelation of truth, half-truths, and lies.

The script is playing around in some tricky territory (just check out all the content warnings), but I trust Michelle’s instincts, and I’m very curious to see how this story plays out in the context of the Minnesota Fringe Festival.

Plus, it’s hard not to root for a cast where one of their bios includes the lines: “You may see Tri around town at offbeat concerts, in supporting performance arts roles, and struggling with the assimilation and gentrification of Asian American political relations via various forms of social cause work. His go-to karaoke crowd pleaser song can be either "So What" by Pink or "Fat Lip" by Sum 41, depending on who's in the room.”
