Fringe 2023 - Returning Favorites - Les Kurkendaal Barrett

Climbing My Family Tree

Les takes a test on Ancestry.com. The results are shocking. Watch him uncover an almost 100 year old family mystery and meet some cool new relatives in the process!

Here’s a recommendation for you: I’ve already seen this show and I’m very excited to have the chance to see it again.

Les Kurkendaal Barrett (part of the pre-Fringe Top 10 list back in 2007 on this blog) performed the story of Climbing My Family Tree for a camera previously and submitted it to be part of the online offerings in the first of the pandemic Minnesota Fringe Festivals (2020) [Don't worry, the review doesn't spoil the show].  Unsurprisingly, Les’ storytelling adapted smoothly to even the strictures of an online format.  But of course, getting to see this story as Les meant it to be told, live and onstage in front of an audience, will be its own delight.

So after Les’ return to Minnesota stages after the pandemic pause with last year’s fantastic solo outing, The Real Black Swann: Confessions of America’s First Black Drag Queen, we get a chance to see something we’ve only seen on screen before.  I’m very much looking forward to it.

UPDATE 8/3: Les did a preview (complete with SAG-AFTRA strike T-shirt) on Fringe Eve, the night before the festival began:
