Fringe 2023 - Returning Favorites - Clevername Theatre

Mother Courage Bear and Her Children

Heartcadia is at war. In Sunshine’s name, Bears and Bear Cousins battle. Clouds are pillaged. Friendship forests burn. The Rainbow River runs red with blood. But fear not; Mother Courage is a bear who cares.

(but, again, to be clear, it’s a comedy)

Clevername Theatre took the newly public domain characters of Winnie the Pooh and friends last year and crossed them with Edward Albee’s play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and all that was weird enough to get my attention and land them on the 2022 pre-Fringe Top 20 list on this blog.  Their Fringe preview, of an actor wheeling out a “Virginia Woolf” style drinking cart, only to reveal an enormous pot of honey that he dipped his hands into and then slathered all over his mouth and face, while other unseen voices called out lines from the play in the background - had the audience in stitches. Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to see "Who's Afraid of Winnie The Pooh" but I felt like I heard about it a lot, out and about during the festival, from very amused audience members.

They’re back again this year, inserting more beloved bears into Brecht’s “Mother Courage and Her Children,” providing us with character names like Mother Courage Bear, Ensemble Bear, Hubris Bear, Cowardice Bear, Sandwich Bear, Drudgery Bear, and Humanity Bear.  It’s gonna be another weird one.  Maybe I’ll get them on the schedule this time…

UPDATE 8/3: They did a hilarious Fringe preview on Fringe Eve, the night before the festival began ("Exit the bears, pursued by themselves!")
