Here’s another one from the pre-Fringe Top 10 list for 2022 - Last year, local playwright/actress Maureen L. Bourgeois (the brains behind Lady Z Productions) put her new play in progress, Daybreak Diner, up on its feet to learn how it worked in front of audiences. It was a fascinating window into how the past influences the present, and though the structure of it still needed some tinkering, and might have been hampered by the necessary time limits of a Fringe slot in a larger festival schedule, the production was a useful step in the script’s development. The cast worked well as an ensemble and some of the smaller moments between characters were really compelling.
This year, Maureen is literally using input from the audience in real time to shape the way this other new play progresses. I’m intrigued to see how this conceit works out. I’ve seen it done in other plays, inside and outside the Fringe, and when done well it can be a lot of fun.
